A Pet For A Special Needs Child

I have read about the benefits for special needs kids having a pet. I knew that I wanted the best for Little C, but I have to admit, I was not to excited about the work that comes with a pet. The clean up, the feeding, I am a homeschooling mom of 5. I have my handsful. Well, my kids wanted a dog, and after much prayer by them, I was softened. I was nervous about how Little C would respond though. All the benefits I have read about won’t help if Little C is afraid of a dog.

Studies show that special needs children with pets have increased social skills, better speech, and are calmer than similar children with out pets. As a special needs mom, I am always looking for ways to help Little C reach her potential.

She normally loves dogs, from a far. She will look at dogs through her window, and squeal with joy. When face to face, she panicked. It was too much for her to process. This was scary. Something that she can not control that is coming right at her. So when we decided to add a dog to my family, you can imagine the apprehension I felt.

To make sure we picked the right dog, we decided to try fostering a dog first. This way, we have a chance to be sure that the dog fits with our family, and that the kids are ready for a dog. At the same time, we are able to fill a need, caring for dogs that have been abused or neglected.

Well, I am happy to say that things are going so well! We are currently fostering a Labrador cross named Bailey. She is 2 years old and loves kids.

Little C took about an hour, and that was it! She now follows our Lab cross who weighs as much as she does around, and leads her by the collar. Bailey is amazingly calm with Little C, who hugs her and drags her around. Little C is speaking more as she tries to boss the dog around.

I will post more as we continue to see the benefits that Little C enjoys. Here is hoping and praying that Bailey not only helps the older children with responsibility, but teaches Little C skills she needs!
