I love soups. This Ham and Bean Soup is a family recipe that is easy to make, freezes well, and is a crowd pleaser! I often will make a bone in ham for a Sunday dinner, so I keep some meat on the bones and freeze it until I am looking for an easy supper. This way, I alway have the ingredients on hand! I also make this and freeze containers for my husband to take for work lunches. He loves it!

Ham And Bean Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • Ham Bone (I usually leave meat on the bone)
  • 2 cups diced ham (Or what is left on the bone)
  • 6 cups water
  • 3 carrots diced
  • 4 celery ribs diced
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 can black eyed peas drained rinsed
  • 2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp sriracha (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp white sugar

Instructions

  1. Boil the ham bone in a pot with water for 1 hour.
  2. Remove the bone and allow it to cool.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a low boil for 20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender
  4. Serve and enjoy!

This soup is even a big hit with my kids, who hate beans. It is also so easy to customize. Like heat? Add cayenne pepper, more chilli powder or sriracha sauce. Like it sweeter? Add more sugar. I also sub out the sugar for agave syrup with great success! The possibilities are endless!
