7 Ideas For Keeping Kids Busy and Media Free This Summer

Summer is a lazy time for parents and children alike. A time to sleep in, a time to relax, a time to refresh. For many families, this time is also filled with television, computers and video games. While in moderation there is nothing wrong with these, we also want to be sure our children are learning, and retaining what they learned in school last year.

Years ago on rainy days kids would pick up a book, or play board games. Now, we all watch television and play on the computer. It’s all about moderation. There are things we can do to help keep those little brains working and little bodies moving through the summer months.

Work To Earn Digital Media

We have the children read to earn time on their tablets. One chapter = 15 minutes on their device. This helps motivate them to read and keeps the tablet use controlled.

 Join A Summer Reading Club

Many libraries offer reading clubs and programs for children of all ages, as well as themed activities. My kids love the reading clubs offered at our library. Teven offer prizes for reading the required amounts.

Be a Good Neighbour

We all have a neighbour or two who struggles with yard work or household work. Find some one you and the kids can help over the summer. You will teach your child about giving back, and everyone will feel good about themselves.

Start a Summer Business

Help start up a lemonade stand or encourage your child to mow lawns for some extra cash. Find something they want to save up for, and help them earn the money.

Learn a New Skill

Fill the longer days by learning something new. Try painting or building models. Learn to play a musical instrument. The new skills your child learns will help not only fill their days but give them a hobby for the future.

Start a Summer Scrap Book

Take a small walk each day and look for new things to add to a scrap book. Different types of flowers and leaves, take pictures of different insects. The possibilities are endless!

Be An Example

Kids learn by watching. Read in front of them, get out and play games with them. The more you do, the more they will do.

There are so many activities to do, and things to learn. Our children are kids for such a short time. Enjoy it together. What do you do to keep busy in the summer months?
