Thrifty Thursdays: Make Your Own Beauty Products

When I began having children, I needed to start looking for ways to ave money. Going from 2 incomes to 1 was hard, especially when you find out your second is on the way when you have a 3 month old! The first thing I gave up was my little luxuries  When I was single, I never would have thought beauty products were luxuries  but when you compare them to diapers and milk…..

Now I have 5 children, and still 1 income. After many years of putting my self last, I wanted to feel beautiful again. So I began making scrubs and facial masks myself. I already had the ingredients, so why not?
Here are 2 of my favourites:

Honey & Brown Sugar Body Scrub

This feels amazing, and is so easy!
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup olive or coconut oil

Mix thoroughly and enjoy!

Honey Nutmeg Facial Mask

This is great for bleaching red spots! It is wise to test this before use to be sure you won’t have a reaction to the mask.
1/8 cup honey
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp lemon juice

Apply to face. It may burn a bit. Keep it on up to 30 minutes, or until you can’t take it!

Next week I will share some more, so be sure to keep a look out! Subscribe to my RSS feed and never miss my Thrifty Thursday tips!

  1. Those sound great! Would the nutmeg one be good for red acne bumps?

  2. Besides feeling great, I bet it smells amazing as well!

  3. This is probably a lot more cost-friendly than the scrubs I buy at the store!! Thanks for sharing :)

  4. I like the idea of this better than chemical laden products you buy in the stores. I’ve heard a lot of people using coconut oil in homemade beauty products lately. I’m going to make these!

  5. This sounds like something I will do, I like the idea of making homemade products.

i love making my own facial masks. but i have already tried this one a few wks back and my skin reacted so bad to the cinnamon . i will try it again with less cinnamon.

I’ve been using coconut oil as a hand moisturizer–this mask sounds wonderful. But I think I would try the Honey Nutmeg Facial Mask to reduce red spots. I like the idea of homemade body products–it fits with our goal of choosing whole foods made from scratch…more natural.

  12. This is great, I love face masks. The Honey Nutmeg facial mask is one that I have never heard of before, I can’t wait to give it a try. Thank you for sharing this great DIY facial mask recipe.

  13. The best homemade masque I ever made was egg white and cornstarch, and it pulled every trace of dirt from my pores. I would use the yolk for my hair and to restore moisture to my face then take a nice shower.

  14. Chrystal Thurston

  19. I like to try different facial scrub recipes from time to time. (Not too many within a short amount of time, it wouldn’t be good for my skin) This recipe sounds good enough to eat!

Sounds easy to make, but I have sensitive skin. You said this may burn and to keep it on as long as you stand it. That kind of scares me about even trying it. I only found out 6 years ago that I am hyper allergic to Lavender. Maybe it is just something that came with age, but I’m leery of trying things on my face anymore.

    • I understand. I was hesitant at first too. You can try some on the inside of your arm to see if you react. I will be posting some sensitive skin care tips in the new future.

  32. Tamra Phelps

  36. I might try this but I didn’t like that you said it might burn. lol I’m such a baby when putting things on my face.
