Random Acts Of Kindness Day

February 17- Random Acts Of Kindness Day

Did you know that February 17 is Random Acts Of Kindness Day? This is news to me! In a world where we see road rage every day, and people so self-absorbed they ignore the people around them, a day like this is a welcome change. It really saddens me to see how people treat each other these days. I don’t just mean the violence we see on the news, I mean the everyday interactions we see. Watching teenagers walk out in the middle of the street nearly causing an accident because walking to an intersection is too hard. Seeing someone cut off a car only to turn right away, really? Did that 2 seconds really improve your day? Society only sees itself, not the bigger picture.

I remember a few years ago, I was taking the bus with my children. I had 2 little ones in a double stroller, and 2 older ones walking. The bus stopped and I instructed my 2 older ones to get on, I was right behind them. As I lifted my stroller, a woman ran in front of me…..between me and my children……to get on before me. I was so shocked that someone could be so self-centred that they would get between a mother and little children! Yet, this is the world we live in.

Focus on Others

Taking a day to celebrate random acts of kindness is a good start. When we stop and look around us, we see the real world. We see the elderly woman struggling to carry her groceries, we see the busy mom trying to load the kids in the car. Our struggles happen to other people too and noticing this changes or perspective. It’s a chance to do something selfless. Just imagine if everybody you know did just one thing to celebrate Kindness. What would that look like in your community?

You Never Know The Impact Of Your Kind Act

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. An estimated 16.2 million adults in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode. We often feel like no one sees us, no one cares. Kindness may not be a cure, but a start. It shows someone you see them, that you care. Not only that, but it boosts your mood too. Have you ever noticed how good you feel after doing something for someone else?

We Can Be The Change

What we do now influences our children. We have more influence than we know. One act can create a ripple. One act can lead to another, and influence a generation as long as we start somewhere. What other ideas can you think of for Random Acts Of Kindness Day?
